Taken by the River

A folk woman is chosen to be offered to the River God in hopes of bringing rain and a good harvest. On the day of sacrifice, she is purified, dressed, and finally submerged in the river. Inspired by the tragic tale of He Bo’s marriage in Records of the Grand Historian, this short film reflects on the cruelty, ignorance, and blind obedience behind the ritual of live sacrifice.
